👋🏻 Welcome to Starting 11! The Champions League quarter-final matchups are set after a tense night, with Real Madrid surviving a controversial derby, Arsenal and Aston Villa securing Premier League representation, and Borussia Dortmund edging through. Meanwhile, Vancouver Whitecaps stunned Monterrey to become just the second MLS team to eliminate a Mexican side after losing the first leg at home. Elsewhere, Ronaldo has withdrawn from the CBF presidency race after failing to secure backing, and Adidas' Germany 125th Anniversary kit has leaked. Let’s dive in!
Real Madrid survived a derby scare in a match not without controversy, losing 1-0 to Atlético but prevailing on penalties thanks to Antonio Rüdiger’s winning spot-kick. Arsenal and Aston Villa ensured Premier League representation in the last eight, while Borussia Dortmund got past Lille to complete the lineup.
The quarter-finals promise fireworks: Arsenal faces Madrid, Bayern takes on Inter, PSG meets Villa, and Barcelona clashes with Dortmund. Mark your calendars for April 8-9 (first legs) and April 15-16 (second legs). Let the chaos begin.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC pulled off a historic upset, eliminating Monterrey on away goals after a thrilling 2-2 draw (3-3 agg.) in Torreón. The ‘Caps, now unbeaten in six matches, became just the second MLS team to knock out a Mexican club after failing to win the first leg at home. Édier Ocampo netted his first goal for Vancouver, while Brian White’s strike—assisted by Andrés Cubas in his 100th appearance—proved decisive. A late Sergio Ramos penalty wasn’t enough for Rayados, as Vancouver marched into the quarterfinals, where they’ll face either Pumas UNAM or Alajuelense.
Elsewhere, Club América demolished Guadalajara 4-0 (4-1 agg.), with Brian Rodríguez starring in a dominant Clásico de México victory. Meanwhile, LA Galaxy found their attacking rhythm, crushing Herediano 4-1 (4-2 agg.) to book a quarterfinal clash with Tigres. The last two Round of 16 ties wrap up tonight, with Inter Miami visiting Cavalier and Pumas facing Alajuelense.
In one of the biggest upsets of the AFC Champions League Two season, Lion City Sailors held Sanfrecce Hiroshima to a 1-1 draw, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory and a historic semi-final berth. The Singaporean side weathered early pressure, struck first through Lennart Thy, and held firm despite Yotaro Nakajima’s free-kick giving the visitors a glimmer of hope. A second-half red card to Ryo Germain further dented Sanfrecce’s chances, and despite late pressure, they couldn’t break through.
With quarter-final spots on the line, all eight UEFA Europa League ties remain in play after a dramatic first-leg round. Athletic Club aims to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Roma at a raucous San Mamés, while Frankfurt defends its 2-1 lead against Ajax, who seek their 100th Europa League goal. Lazio, fresh from a chaotic nine-man win, hosts Viktoria Plzeň. Olympiacos needs a miracle to erase Bodø/Glimt’s 3-0 advantage.
Elsewhere, Rangers look to finish off Fenerbahçe after a stunning 3-1 win in Istanbul, while Lyon, Spurs, and Manchester United all face crucial home ties. Quarter-finals loom—who’s making it through?
Boston River travels to Brazil aiming to secure a historic spot in the Copa Libertadores group stage. After a goalless first leg in Montevideo, everything is on the line in Thursday’s clash at the Arena Fonte Nova. A win sends either side through, while a draw forces penalties. The loser will still have a lifeline in the Copa Sudamericana. Despite struggling domestically, Boston River remains unbeaten in continental play. Coach Jadson Viera has rotated his squad to prioritize this decisive match, where a heavily adjusted lineup will face Rogerio Ceni’s Bahia
With quarter-final spots on the line, the UEFA Conference League round of 16 is set for a thrilling conclusion. Chelsea, Panathinaikos, and Molde defend narrow leads, while Fiorentina and Legia Warszawa look to bounce back at home. Vitória SC and Real Betis are deadlocked after a 2-2 first leg, setting up a tense battle in Portugal.
Elsewhere, Jagiellonia carry a commanding 3-0 lead over Cercle Brugge, while Pafos and Celje hope to hold onto their slim advantages. Copenhagen, meanwhile, look to pull off a shock comeback at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.
Brazilian football legend Ronaldo has withdrawn from the race for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) after failing to secure enough backing from regional federations. The two-time World Cup winner had hoped to restore Brazil’s footballing prestige but found 23 of the 27 federations unwilling to engage with his candidacy.
With the electoral system favoring the federations, Ronaldo acknowledged there was no realistic path forward. Current president Ednaldo Rodrigues, who enjoys overwhelming support, is now expected to run unopposed in next year’s election.
FootyHeadlines has leaked official images of the Adidas Germany 125th Anniversary kit, set for release in March 2025. The design is a tribute to the DFB’s founding in 1900, featuring an off-white base with black accents, the Trefoil logo, and a special 125th-anniversary crest. A debossed eagle and German flag detail inside the collar add to the historic feel. This kit marks one of Adidas' final designs for Germany before Nike takes over in 2027. It will be worn in at least one match and is available in both short and long-sleeve versions.
After six years of financial controls, FIFA has restored full access to funds for the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), marking a major step forward for the organization. The restrictions, imposed in 2018 due to financial mismanagement, had forced FIFA to distribute funds in small instalments rather than lump sums.
The decision follows a recent FIFA audit and reforms under new president Tabith Awal and general secretary Imran Hossain Tushar. With funding now restored, the challenge for the BFF is maintaining financial transparency and proving that past mismanagement is a thing of the past.
Arsenal have made a formal approach for Joshua Kimmich, but Bayern Munich are increasingly expected to extend his contract until 2029 without a salary increase. PSG and Inter Milan are also in the race, though no final decision has been made.
With Kimmich likely staying, Arsenal are exploring alternatives. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi remains a key target, though his €60m release clause is an obstacle. Sporting’s Morten Hjulmand could be available for around €40m despite an €80m clause. Bruno Guimarães is also admired, but Newcastle are unlikely to sell to a Premier League rival.
If you’re into managerial chaos and historical football throwbacks, Unexpected Delirium has a must-read on Huddersfield Town’s bold (or reckless) gamble. Ian King breaks down the club’s decision to sack Michael Duff despite sitting just outside the playoff spots and explores whether interim boss Jon Worthington can turn things around. The piece also digs into the influence of sporting director Mark Cartwright—and whether Duff was simply a scapegoat. Plus, a fascinating nod to Herbert Chapman on the 100th anniversary of his move from Huddersfield to Arsenal.
